Frequently Asked Questions
Everything worth asking before you buy
Is every piece one of a kind?
Yes. Every piece offered by The Paper Age is an original printed page taken from a period publication, not a newly produced copy. Because each object has survived from its own time, no two examples are quite identical. Age, paper tone, printing characteristics, edge wear, and other small traces of use become part of the individual history of the piece.
Most pieces are offered as a single original. Once a piece has been sold, it is no longer available for purchase, but its catalogue page remains permanently accessible in the Sold Archive. We preserve these records so that publication details, imagery, condition notes, and historical context are not lost simply because an object has found a new home. View available prints
Are these modern reprints?
No. The Paper Age does not sell modern reproductions presented as vintage originals. Every piece in the archive is an original paper object produced during the period associated with its publication.
Whenever the information can be established, each catalogue record identifies the original publication, publication year, brand, subject, artist or photographer, and other relevant details. We distinguish between what can be documented and what can only be observed or reasonably attributed. Where something cannot be established with confidence, we do not present an assumption as fact.
The result is an archive of real printed objects rather than newly printed interpretations of historical imagery. Read our archive story
How are availability and ordering handled?
Because most pieces exist as a single original, availability is confirmed before an order is finalized. An inquiry allows us to verify that the piece is still available, review any questions you may have, and confirm the appropriate shipping and secure payment arrangements.
Submitting an inquiry does not obligate you to purchase the piece. It simply begins the process and gives us an opportunity to confirm the object and provide the information necessary to complete the order.
Once availability has been confirmed, you will receive the details needed to proceed with secure payment and shipping. View prints open to inquiry
How are payments handled?
Payments through The Paper Age are handled using secure payment services. When your payment is processed directly by a payment provider, we do not store your complete credit or debit card details.
We understand that some collectors may feel more comfortable purchasing through a marketplace they already know and use. If you prefer, selected pieces may also be purchased through our shops on Etsy or eBay, where payment and checkout are handled directly through those platforms.
If you see a piece on The Paper Age that you would prefer to purchase through Etsy or eBay, simply contact us and we will let you know whether that option is available.
Whichever way you choose to purchase, you are buying from the same collection at The Paper Age. How to inquire
How does U.S. domestic shipping work?
The Paper Age is based in Seattle, Washington, and ships throughout the United States.
U.S. domestic orders of $35 or more qualify for free standard shipping. Orders below $35 may include a shipping charge, which will be confirmed before payment.
Original paper objects require more care than ordinary printed merchandise. Each piece is prepared for shipment with protection appropriate to its size and condition, with the aim of keeping the object flat, secure, and protected from unnecessary movement during transit.
If an order contains multiple pieces, they may be combined into a single shipment whenever it can be done safely. Any special shipping requirements will be discussed before the order is finalized. Learn about shipping
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. The Paper Age welcomes inquiries from collectors and buyers outside the United States.
International shipping is quoted individually according to the destination, package size, weight, and the level of protection required for the object. We confirm the shipping cost before payment so that you can review the complete order total before deciding to proceed.
International buyers should be aware that customs duties, import taxes, VAT, or other local charges may apply depending on the destination country. Unless otherwise stated, these charges are the responsibility of the recipient and are not included in the quoted shipping price.
Because international postal conditions vary considerably, available shipping and tracking options may also differ by destination. Read about worldwide shipping
Are the prints sold framed?
Unless a listing specifically states otherwise, pieces from The Paper Age are sold unframed.
We intentionally preserve the original paper object separately from a permanent framing choice. This allows collectors to select a frame, mount, and presentation appropriate to their own space while also making storage and shipping safer and more practical.
Dimensions are provided on individual catalogue pages so that you can consider framing before purchasing. Because older publication pages do not always correspond exactly to modern standard frame sizes, we recommend waiting until you have received and measured the actual object before ordering a custom mat or frame.
How do I understand condition?
These are historical paper objects, and age is part of what they are.
A printed page that has survived for several decades may show changes in paper tone, small edge marks, handling traces, minor creases, printing irregularities, or other signs of its journey through time. We do not automatically regard these characteristics as defects; many are natural evidence of the object's age and material history.
Each catalogue listing records the condition of the individual piece and, where possible, includes close-detail imagery so that you can examine the paper surface, printing, edges, and other relevant characteristics before making an inquiry.
Significant damage or unusual condition issues are described rather than intentionally concealed. Our aim is to represent each object as it actually exists today. Explore catalogue details
Why do some pieces show signs of age?
Paper changes over time. Exposure to air, light, storage conditions, handling, printing processes, and the original composition of the paper can all influence how a page ages.
Slight toning, softened edges, tiny imperfections, or variations in the printed surface can therefore tell part of the story of an original object. They distinguish a page that has existed for fifty, seventy, or one hundred years from a reproduction made yesterday.
We value this material evidence of age, often described broadly as patina, while still evaluating condition carefully. Age alone does not make damage desirable, and serious flaws are documented when present.
How do you identify the publication and year?
Whenever possible, catalogue information is established from the physical source itself. This may include publication titles, dates, page context, printing information, advertisements on adjacent pages, editorial material, or other evidence associated with the original publication.
Additional reference sources may be consulted where appropriate. Artist signatures, photographers, agencies, campaigns, and other details are attributed only when the available evidence supports doing so.
Historical print material can sometimes be incomplete or ambiguous. When a publication, date, creator, or other detail cannot be established with reasonable confidence, the catalogue record reflects that uncertainty rather than filling the gap with an unsupported assumption.
What happens after a piece is sold?
A sold object disappears from the market, but it does not disappear from the archive.
Once a piece has been sold, its catalogue page remains accessible through the Sold Archive. The record continues to preserve available information about the object, including its imagery, publication, date, subject, condition, and historical context.
Sold records also remain connected to related eras, brands, subjects, artists, publications, and pieces that may still be available. Over time, this allows The Paper Age to document not only what is currently for sale, but a broader history of the printed material that has passed through the archive.
For us, a sale represents a change in ownership—not the end of an object's record. View the Sold Archive
What exactly am I buying?
You are purchasing the physical vintage paper object described and photographed in the individual listing.
You are not purchasing a modern reproduction, digital download, or newly manufactured poster unless a listing explicitly states otherwise. The images shown on the website document the actual piece offered whenever possible.
Purchase of the physical object does not automatically transfer copyright, reproduction rights, trademark rights, or other intellectual-property rights associated with the original artwork, photograph, advertisement, publication, or brand.
You are purchasing the historical paper object itself: a surviving piece of print culture from another time.
